Welcome to Lo Que Dejamos Atrás, a student short film about the quiet power of memories, generational bonds, and how cultural threads tie us together.

Synopsis

This story follows Abuelito Fernando, an aging Mexican grandfather, who is trying to reconnect with his granddaughter, Lucía. He attempts to do so through objects that hold nostalgic memories between the both of them, which includes a balero, a traditional Mexican toy that Abuelito Fernando once taught Lucía how to play. Lucía doesn’t realize the meaning of these gestures and the importance of keeping her culture alive. This story captures the unspoken heartbreak of growing old alone and trying to hold on to nostalgic memories with loved ones.

Crew Message

For many of us, this film is deeply personal and It reminds us of the cloth that we were cut from. A cloth which is woven with the smell of our abuelitas’ kitchens, the laughter during family games, the color of the flowers in their garden, and the wisdom our elders have shared with us. Although as we grow up we realize life moves fast, we forget to call, and we don’t realize the last time we see our grandparents might really be the last. That’s why we’re telling Lo Que Dejamos Atrás not just as filmmakers, but as grandchildren. This is our way of preserving the stories we grew up with and honoring those who shaped us.

How to help?

Our fundraising goal is $9,000 which will cover essential expenses; such as securing location for filming and culturally accurate wardrobe and props, renting filming equipment, and feeding our cast and crew. A portion of the budget will support submitting the film to festivals, helping us share this story about Mexican culture and the importance of family across the world.
