Hi! My name is Electra Bennett, and I’m a junior at Millfield School in the UK and a proud resident of Camden, Maine. The idea for the Look Up and Wave Challenge started after I had my phone privileges taken away for four months last year. During that time, I realized just how dependent I—and so many other teens—had become on social media. It was difficult at first, but ultimately eye-opening. I made a personal commitment to be more present and intentional with how I use my phone.

That experience inspired this project: a one-day challenge on August 16 that encourages people to put down their devices and focus on real human connection through simple, kind gestures like smiling, waving, or holding a door. It’s also a tribute to Kermit Ingraham, a beloved Camden resident who used to sit outside and wave at every person who passed by—a small act that made a big impact.

All proceeds will go to Cybersmile, a multi-award-winning nonprofit committed to digital wellbeing and tackling all forms of online bullying and abuse . I’d be so grateful for your support in helping bring this vision to life—and please feel free to share this campaign on social media to help spread the word!
