Loni You CAN-CER vive! Financial Medical Relief

Hello everyone. I have a very dear friend who could use some help.

Loni Davidson grew up in St. Walburg. She moved to Lloyd in 2003, and I met her in '05 or '06. We became instant friends. Over time, life got in the way, but we always reconnected, picking up where we left off. She continued to live in the area until 2018, when she moved to Red Deer with her little family. This is where she still resides today.

At 32, Loni was diagnosed with PAPILLARY THYROID CANCER: stage T2N1B. (Equivalent to stage 2 if it was another form of cancer). She never had thyroid conditions previously, but went to a walk in clinic for an unrelated matter in February of 2021. Normally Loni wouldn't mention her fatigue, because it's normal for her, but for some reason happened to, so the doctor sent her for complete blood work. Her antibodies and thyroid level came back low, but the results were unclear. She was then sent for an ultrasound, which showed calcium deposits on her lymph nodes, both right and left, which indicated possible cancer. From there a biopsy was done on Loni, which resulted in her thyroid cancer diagnosis. Residing in Red Deer, Loni's physician asked if she preferred to have medical care in Calgary, or Edmonton. She chose Edmonton because her family is primarily in the Lloydminster area, which would allow her to have more support from them.

Since then, Loni went to a head and neck specialist at the U of A in Edmonton. Surgery was scheduled for June 23, where she had a total thyroidectomy, and central and bilateral neck dissection. Of the 60 lymph nodes that were removed, the cancer was in 28 of them. (Keep in mind that this is all in the midst of Covid, so her loved ones were not allowed to be with her during her surgery, she was in the hospital completely alone).

Yesterday, (July 29th), Loni met with her Oncologist at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton, and she's scheduled for radiation August 27th. Sadly, once she has this, she will be unable to have her son Chase (10), with her for a week, due to the radiation. Her complete medical mapping hasn't been presented to her just, yet, but she will know more after the scans that will follow her radiation. This is just a starting point, but updates will come as I have them.

When I approached Loni about a GoFundMe, she initially said no. Being the independent woman that she is, she struggles to accept help. Because I personally know that recovery takes a lot of time, and can be financially straining, I have talked her into allowing me to ask for assistance. Loni didn’t have a choice with the diagnosis, and understands that this is a life long battle. She will be on medication for the rest of her life, and will be travelling from Red Deer to Edmonton for regular appoints for an undetermined amount of time. She's currently unable to work, having to keep her immune system at its best while she goes through treatment. Her son's dad is a great support, but he too will be missing work, either to travel with her, or stay back and care for Chase, once he's back in school.

Please consider helping by donating if you have the means, and if you wish to offer support by sending words of encouragement instead, those help on the down days too. We don't know how long Loni's battle will last, but what we do know, is that her family and friends would love to see her burdens not lie with draining her financially. We would like to see her focus entirely on her fight and recovery, so she can get life back to normal with her boy Chase.

Thank you everyone!
