Longford Rail Bridge Restoration

The 1870 rail bridge at Longford, Tasmania, was the longest iron bridge in Australia at the time. It boasted huge iron pillars at each end and was a source of great  pride in the community, and admired and photographed by visitors.

Though the bridge still exists and is part of the TasRail network, in the 1960s, sadly, the magnificent pillars were removed and destroyed.

Using modern lightweight composite materials, it is now possible for the community to replace these wonderful features and restore the bridge to its former glory. Once again, locals can feel the pride, and tourists admire the industrial heritage left by our 19th century engineers.

The funds you donate will replace the four pillars (two at each end) and be entirely expended in Tasmania. The Northern Midlands Council is trustee for the funds and any surplus will go to essential maintenance of the nearby Flinty Creek Viaduct.

This year is the sesquicentennial (150th anniversary) of the completion of the bridge and beginning of railways in Tasmania. With your help, we can raise the funds and complete the project before the year is over.
