“Citizen of the World” is a title worn well of the passport of Josef Alayra. Born in Quezon City, Philippines and growing up in Los Angeles was only the beginning of numerous long distance ventures for Joe. Following a stint in the U.S. Army as a Combat Engineer at only 18 years old, Joe threw on a backpack and hit the road with a sense of discovery providing the wind to his sails of adventure. During this trip around the world, he learned how to brave the high seas by attempting to sail from the Philippines to Darwin, Australia. As misfortune would have it, his sailing instructor/partner abandoned the trip two-thirds of the way through, leaving the trip incomplete.
Joe Alayra, 1983, First Infantry Division.
28 years later, Joe has decided to complete this iteration of the Hero’s Journey with no one but himself. “Lone Man at Sea” is a project retracing and honoring the 5,000 kilometer trip embarked on by U.S. Army Veterans during World War II that played a pivotal role in liberating the Philippines from Japanese occupation. The excursion will begin on the Philippine Day of Valor (April 9) aboard a wooden outrigger sailboat. Join him as he captures the human experience on film and gives a nod to past, present and future citizens of the world living in Southeast Asia.
Approximate course taken in 1945.
In order to embark on his passion project, Joe Alayra needs financial assistance that will go towards logistics and modern videography equipment.
Any help and donation amount is appreciated!
