Lola's Brain Recovery Fund

The Garcia family is asking for your help in supporting Lola as her brain recovers. In February of 2023, Lola was unexpectedly hospitalized after being found unresponsive in her home. She was transported via ambulance to the ER where she suffered from seizures. After countless days intubated in the neurological ICU with no answers of what had happened or why she was not responsive, she was diagnosed with Autoimmune Encephalitis, a condition in which the body’s immune system attacks the brain, causing brain swelling.

After Lola was taken off the ventilator and sedation, we were able to assess the damage that her brain sustained. Lola had limited mobility, almost no vision, impacted bodily organs, and limited short-term memory. For example, she was unaware that she was about to become a grandmother despite having thrown a baby shower weeks before for her granddaughter that is named after her.

Lola spent three weeks in the hospital and then three weeks in a skilled nursing facility. Since then, she has been home with her parents and requires 24/7 care. Lola has received countless hours of physical, occupational, and speech therapy. She has made significant progress such as regaining the ability to talk, walk with assistance, and complete some daily tasks but there is still a long road ahead. Lola's life looks very different now and it is unknown how much her brain will recover.

Words cannot adequately describe how stressful and traumatizing this experience has been for the Garcia family. The new normal for our family looks a lot different now and has included many new expenses. Any contributions made to this page will directly benefit our mom’s health and recovery by helping to cover out-of-pocket medical expenses, specialist visits, 24/7 at-home care, therapies, medical transportation, and necessary home accomodations.

We hope to be able to give our mom the best care possible, as she would do for us. We are praying and hoping that one day soon Lola will be able to see again. That she won't have to use a wheelchair. And that she can remember the events from hours before.

For those of you who know Lola- you know that she is strong, a hard worker, and a warrior. Lola is a mother, daughter, sister, caregiver, leader, volunteer, and friend. She is deeply caring and fiercely passionate and will do anything to support the people that she cares about. She is the glue of our family. Fue transportada en ambulancia a la sala de emergencias donde sufrió convulsiones. Después de innumerables días intubada en la UCI neurológica sin respuestas sobre lo que había sucedido o por qué no respondía, se le diagnosticó con encefalitis autoinmune, una afección en la que el sistema inmunitario del cuerpo ataca el cerebro y causa inflamación cerebral.

Después de que a Lola le quitaron el ventilador y la sedación, pudimos evaluar el daño que sufrió su cerebro. Lola tenía movilidad limitada, casi sin visión, órganos corporales afectados y memoria limitada a corto plazo. Por ejemplo, no sabía que estaba a punto de convertirse en abuela a pesar de haber organizado un baby shower semanas antes para su nieta que lleva su nombre.

Lola pasó tres semanas en el hospital y luego tres semanas en un centro de enfermería especializada. Desde entonces, ha estado en casa con sus padres y requiere atención las 24 horas del día, los 7 días de la semana. Lola ha recibido innumerables horas de terapia física, ocupacional y del habla. Ha logrado un progreso significativo, como recuperar la capacidad de hablar, caminar con ayuda y completar algunas tareas diarias, pero aún queda un largo camino por recorrer. La vida de Lola se ve muy diferente ahora y se desconoce cuánto se recuperará su cerebro.

Las palabras no pueden describir adecuadamente cuán estresante y traumatizante ha sido esta experiencia para la familia García. La nueva normalidad para nuestra familia se ve muy diferente ahora y ha incluido muchos gastos nuevos.
