Lola the rescued Bulldog needs your support!

You have heard us say it before, and we are saying it again. The bad breeding of Bulldogs needs to stop!

No animal should ever struggle to breathe, yet here we have Lola, who just sitting down struggles to get enough oxygen into her lungs. You shouldn’t have to hear an animal struggle to intake oxygen, the basic rights of any animal is taken away when breeding turns to cruelty!

Lola came in recently after her third family in only a few years could no longer look after her. We thank them for contacting a rescue who can make sure her medical needs are covered, and she gets all the help she needs.

Does this video make you uncomfortable? It does for us! It’s hard to watch, even harder to know that this has been going on for years. Day one for Lola was a hard one, even a short walk and her tongue would turn blue, she was then limited for exercise in the fear she would collapse from lack of oxygen. The start of this video was taken before a walk.

On Day two, she went up to our veterinary unit where our vet and vet nurses were able to give her a thorough vet check and to start treatment.

Below is what our vet found-

Health issues:

BOAS (brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome). This is a combination of several abnormalities of the airways which is extremely common in short nosed breeds. It affects their ability to breathe, sleep, relax, exercise, and cool down in the warm weather. We are hoping to vastly improve her breathing with a combination of surgical techniques.

Eyes: she has several conditions affecting her eyes which are extremely painful, uncomfortable and affect her vision. Unfortunately, these have been untreated for years resulting in some permanent loss of vision. These include dry eye, keratitis, uveitis, cherry eye and entropion. We will assess her for ectopic cilia (in growing eyelashes) when she is under GA. We are hoping to correct some with surgery and make her more comfortable with lifelong medication.

Skin: Lola has excessive skin rolls which means the skin between the rolls cannot breathe and are harbouring painful yeast and bacterial infections. We will remove some of these rolls, so she has no future issues. She also has interdigital dermatitis which is being treated with medication.

Ears: she has painful ear infections which has led to narrowed ear canals. These are being treated with medication. Luckily we have already seen vast improvements.

It would appear Lola has been bred from. We will spay her to protect her, from womb infections and ovarian / uterine cancers.

She has been so incredibly tolerant of her new surroundings, examinations, and treatments.

Lola has been the victim of unscrupulous breeding and years of neglect. She has suffered terribly as a result. We can't wait to see how much her quality of life improves over the next few days and weeks.
