I’m Alice, the founder of Wags n Whiskers Pet Services in Derby.
Loki has been with us since his owners rescued him at just 14 weeks old. From the very beginning, it was clear he hadn’t had the easiest start in life — but Yazmin and Alex have poured nothing but love, patience, and unwavering commitment into giving him the safe, nurturing home he always deserved.
Loki is a beautiful Husky x German Shepherd with the sweetest nature, but over the months we’ve also seen him struggle with behaviours that didn’t quite add up. His owners worked tirelessly to support him. They enrolled him in our training programme with our wonderful trainer, Sue. Loki made some short‑term progress, but Sue noticed something unusual in his coat and movement that raised concerns about underlying pain.
After a thorough veterinary assessment, the heartbreaking truth came to light:
Loki has hip dysplasia in both hips, and he is also missing a bone in his elbow — almost certainly a genetic issue.
This isn’t new pain. This is long‑term, chronic pain that Loki has been silently carrying for most of his young life. His behaviour hasn’t been “difficult” — it has been communication. Every sign of discomfort, every moment of reactivity, every struggle to settle has been Loki trying to tell us that he hurts.
He has already been through a pain‑relief trial, but despite everyone’s hopes, it simply hasn’t been enough. Loki is still in significant pain every single day.
And now, without surgery, his future is heartbreakingly uncertain.
None of us — not our team, not his devoted owners, not anyone who has ever met him — can bear the thought of losing Loki when we know his behaviour is rooted in pain, not temperament. With the right treatment, he has every chance of living the long, joyful life he deserves.
We are aiming to raise £2,500 to cover the cost of his first surgery. Combined with his insurance, this will allow Loki to have one of his hips repaired. For the second surgery, we will need to rely entirely on donations.
Yazmin and Alex have gone above and beyond for Loki every single day of his life. They have given him stability, love, and a family. He is their world — and they are his. He does not deserve a short life defined by pain when there is a way forward.
Our whole team has grown incredibly close to Loki and his family, and we are determined to do everything we can to help him get the chance he deserves.
If you are able to contribute — even £1 — it will make a genuine difference. Every single donation brings Loki one step closer to a life free from pain.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read his story. Together, we can give Loki the future he and his family have fought so hard for.
