Lois and Bob Hellstern Nurses Scholarship
Donation protected
Our parents, Lois and Bob Hellstern passed away just five weeks from each another in August and September, 2020.
Lois was a caregiver in her heart and soul and it permeated every aspect of her life. She worked as an RN for her entire career, tending to her patients and her extended family with much love.
Bob was a "visionary financial man". He was appointed Chief Financial Officer at age 24 at St. Joseph's Hospital, Milwaukee, WI, where he met Lois, head nurse, at a budget class that he taught. She quickly became "teacher's pet" and they started dating. Bob was proud of saving many hospitals from bankruptcy throughout his career.
Lois and Bob had a traumatic car accident in 2016 and Lois spent the last four years at Gardens on Quail in Arvada, CO. In the last five months of her life, the facility was in quarantine and we were not able to visit her. We were so grateful to have the caregivers at Gardens on Quail giving Lois the love that we could only send from afar.
Because our mother showed us the value of nursing, and because our father spent his lifetime helping care facilities (and nurses) become financially solvent, we established the Lois and Bob Hellstern Future Nurses Scholarship for Employees at Gardens on Quail.
This scholarship will be given to a staff member (full or part-time) pursuing a nurses degree, continuing education or any other kind of healthcare training. Preference is given for those with financial need. Application for this scholarship is via an essay and a reference letter from a colleague or supervisor at Gardens on Quail. Award decisions will be made in the fall every year and will be made by representatives of the Hellstern family and nurse colleagues of Lois’.
If you would like to honor our mother and father, recognize nurses and care-givers during this pandemic, and help to start this fund, please donate any amount through this online fund.
Thank you,
Elizabeth, Dave and Angela Hellstern
