On Oct. 6th Logan Wilson Byrne came into this world and instantly captivated his mom and dads heart, Michael and Samantha Byrne, as well as his big brother, Trey. It didn't take long for Logan to steal the hearts of others as well. Soon after he was born at Ocshner hospital, he had to be transferred to Woman's Hospital and was admitted into NICU for 9 days as they closely monitored him because his muscles were very tight and he had no suck reflex. The first time I held him I knew there was something very special about this precious baby!
Logan was finally able to go home! His parents and older brother were finally going to experience having their baby HOME!! I can't imagine how wonderful that must have felt.
After follow up Dr. visits and labs, there was concern about his continued issues with his muscle tone. Logan began Physical therapy and occupational therapy. His weekly appointments required a lot of time and Samantha decided not to go back to work like she originally planned because Logan was just way more important of course :)
Logan soon began to experience choking spells when eating and difficulty breathing at times.
Logan has a pretty amazing hero, his big brother, Trey. At 7 years old he saved his little brothers life after he quit breathing and turned blue in the car while on there way to visit Michael. Samantha immediately pulled over and began doing CPR and yelling for help. Trey calmly asked if he should call 911 and explained the situation to the dispatcher. This incident is why Logan was admitted to Our Lady of the Lake hospital.
Fast forward to now and Logan has had multiple EEG's, MRI's and countless labs. Genetic testing, a spinal tap and a sleep study. His body is having a hard time getting rid of CO2 from his body. His respirations are significantly lower than the normal range. But with most of his labs coming back normal they just don't have answers as to why right now. His sleep study results led to a diagnosis of obstructive and central sleep apnea (which basically means Logan's brain is not always telling him to breathe) The recommendation to perform a tracheotomy and put Logan on a ventilator for an uncertain length of time was very scary to say the least. With such an extreme and invasive treatment plan in front of them, Michael and Samantha consulted with all of Logan's specialists, did research, and most importantly lots of prayers that brought them to the decision to seek a second opinion. Michael and Samantha chose to transfer to Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, Texas. Logan's team of doctors began the transfer process immediately. After more than 2 weeks at OLOL hospital in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, their wait was over 12/31/15! Logan is now admitted at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston!Even though this transfer is exciting and hopeful, Logan will have to repeat all the tests, labs, and most importantly the sleep study. Michael and Samantha will have to see their baby go through it all again and their feelings of being helpless are far from gone. With the second best pediatric neurology specialists in the nation now diagnosing and treating Logan, Michael and Samantha are confident they made the right choice.
Trey has showed extraordinary strength throughout all of this! Please keep him in your prayers because I know it won't be easy being away from his parents and little brother. But he will be surrounded with lots of love while they are gone.
And Logan, well, he is the happiest and sweetest baby boy there is with a belly laugh that makes your heart smile. He's tiny but he's a fighter- all while doing it with a smile on his face and lots to say!
Michael and Samantha never ask for help and I know they never would, but I can't imagine how financially strained they are as medical expenses are piling up and likely not to stop anytime soon.
The Byrne family are the rare kind of people you meet in life who genuinely have hearts of gold and allows you to see good in the world through them! I know that my family and I are truly blessed to know them and honored to have them in our lives. They aren't just our friends they really are more like family!
Please pray for my sweet Logan and his whole family. Pray the doctors would have wisdom and find answers quickly! Also, pray that God would continue to give the Bryne family strength, courage, peace and comfort! And find joy in this hope!
Right now, Michael and Samantha are focused on their boys because they are their world! If I could take all this away from them- I would in a second. The reality is, most of their needs are things beyond our capabilities. But, what we CAN do is come together and relieve some of their financial burdens by helping with Logan's medical expenses as well as their personal expenses while in Houston. I can confidently say on their behalf, every prayer and every cent raised for them will be immensely appreciated!
