In early June of this year, Logan started having numbness in his left leg with some back pain. He saw a chiropractor and after a few adjustments felt better. On July 2 he started his new job with the Dubois County Sheriff’s Department. This was a job Logan had been waiting a long time for. Logan wanted to return to his home county and give back to his community. After working out on the road for about a month, the numbness had returned. He started to see a chiropractor again. However, this time he received no relief from his numbness. Within a few weeks he was having complete numbness at times in his left leg with decreased sensation on his left side. These symptoms continued to progress and he started having severe headaches, blurred vision and restless leg syndrome. He had to make a tough choice to work behind a desk as he did not feel safe being out in the road with these symptoms. Logan spoke with The Sheriff and he graciously let him continue to work but on light duty while giving Logan his 100% support as one of his deputies. In the meantime, Logan started to search for answers. Logan was in a tough spot because he did not have insurance coverage yet because of starting his new job and was unable to get any testing done. To add to the symptoms Logan started dealing with memory loss and insomnia. On Monday, September 11 he had an MRI at Jasper and he was diagnosed with a bulging disc, so he was referred to Dr. Sneed in Evansville. Logan saw Dr. Sneed a few days later and he said he needed to have a higher imaging MRI of his lumbar spine before he could make a diagnosis. On Monday, September 18 he went to Evansville and had the MRI repeated, and went to Dr. Sneed’s office for an appointment. Shortly after checking in, the nurse came out and said to go back to the hospital as Dr. Sneed wants a MRI of his cervical spine and brain and to come back for an appointment when done. At the appointment, Dr. Sneed gave Logan the news that he has several white lesions on his brain. Another large one on his spine on the back of his neck and one on his lower spine in an area called the conus. He also has white spots behind his eyes and was diagnosed with Optic Neuritis. Dr. Sneed told us this could possibly be Multiple Sclerosis. He sent Logan directly to the ER at Ascension St. Vincent’s in Evansville. The neurologist reviewed everything and after a thorough examination decided Logan should be immediately admitted to the hospital for steroid IV therapy and a spinal tap. The spinal tap was performed the next morning. Unfortunately, they had to send the sample to California for culture so we would not have a definitive diagnosis for almost a week. In the meantime, they decided to keep him in the hospital and continue the IV treatments. Due to his symptoms were slowly improving he was released on Friday, September 22 but not without a scare. The morning that he was to be dismissed he coughed and had an excruciating headache. Another MRI was done and luckily nothing had changed so he was released and, pending the test results, the plan was to be referred to Vanderbilt. Logan went through the weekend and started to have a few symptoms again but overall felt better. Logan tried to return to work on Monday, September 25 and Tuesday, September 26 but was unable to complete his shifts due to headaches and the pain he was in. On the afternoon of Tuesday September 26, Logan returned to St Vincent’s Emergency Room where he was taken back for pain management and saw the neurologist. The neurologist confirmed a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis. Logan was given a referral and is to see a MS Neurologist at Vanderbilt University Hospital on Wednesday September 27.
To top all this off, Logan is already out of paid leave days due to his illness and he does not qualify for FMLA. With all this said, we are asking anyone who is willing and able to please consider giving a little extra to Logan and Kati to help them pay their bills and medical expenses as the doctors decide on a course of treatment for Logan and help get him back on the road doing what he loves. Logan has dedicated his life to serving others through being an Iraq veteran and being a law enforcement officer. Logan and Kati have budgeted their life with Logan working and currently he is unable to until a treatment plan is made and utilized.
We ask for continued thoughts and prayers for Logan and Kati as they continue through this difficult journey!
