Friends. About a month ago, Dr. Mike Loftus suffered a severe stroke during dinner. Only by the grace of God was there an EMT sitting next to his chair when it happened.
Since that time he has been treated at the hospital and now a rehab center. No surprise to anyone who knows him that he is fighting and making progress. The right side of his body is very limited, his eyesight in his right eye is all but gone and he is working through the cognitive effects of a massive stroke.
Insurance only goes so far and as the the primary family provider unable to work for the foreseeable future, support is needed.
He is working hard daily in PT, OT and speech therapy. Soon he will be released to go home to continue rehab however, we are not sure what that will look like. Needless to say, medical bills are beginning to pile, needed meds/home services are around the corner and living expenses are also piling up.
Mike and Tammy live in South Florida far from family and old friends back home in Texas. Tammy is doing an amazing job managing Mike's care, maintaining her teaching job and keeping things going on her own. Future plans are being made, paperwork is being done and all appropriate financial activities are in progress. It will not be enough for what is ahead.
Those that know Mike well can attest that he has always been a loyal and generous friend who made helping others his life. To see him work so hard to regain what he has lost physically and mentally is both inspiring and heart breaking. Through some of the worst of it, that big grin and hearty laugh shines through.
I am asking his friends, fellow Cardinal alum and those who have the ability, to please support a family in this time of real need. Help them maintain the care he needs to regain as much as he can and assist in keeping the home needs afloat as they work towards what normal will be in the future.
