On May 7, 2023 a tragic accident occurred in Brownsville, Texas, when an SUV mowed down people near a homeless shelter that attends to migrants. Eight pedestrians were killed and ten others injured.
In response to the tragedy, Border Workers United, a community-based organization that develops leadership of workers to construct a movement of worker families in the Texas borderlands, established this fundraiser on GoFundMe to provide support to the victims and their families. The fundraiser aims to provide assistance for medical expenses, temporary hotel accommodations, and other urgent needs for the survivors and families affected by the accident.
The funds raised by Border Workers United are used to provide medical care, temporary hotel accommodations, and other urgent needs for the survivors and families of the victims. Border Workers United is working in collaboration with other local organizations to ensure that all those affected by the accident receive the necessary assistance to recover from their injuries and losses.
The accident in Brownsville highlights the urgent need for comprehensive immigration reform and a compassionate approach to the rights of migrant workers and asylum seekers. Border Workers United continues to advocate for the rights of those affected by the accident and for meaningful change to the US immigration system.
