Project Break The Cycle, our 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in Bridgewater, New Jersey, United States, is gathering donations for their Lebanon Relief Fund. 100% of this fund will be used to purchase and distribute food, medicine, and diapers to individuals and families in need across the Greater Beirut Area. We have local team members on the ground in Tripoli, Lebanon ready to accept funds and begin purchasing and distributing items in Beirut. The beautiful, culturally-rich city of Beirut has just experienced one of the most devastating explosions of the century. On August 4, 2020, a 2,750-ton stockpile of ammonium nitrate exploded killing at least 150, injuring over 5,000, and displacing over 300,000 people (The New York Times, Yahoo News). The explosion had around 10% of the intensity of the atomic bomb that devastated Hiroshima, Japan in 1945 and over 1000 times the amount of ammonium nitrate used in the Oklahoma City attack in 1995. It also destroyed silos that stored 85% of the country’s grain, with any remaining wheat rendered unusable due to contamination (Newsweek).
However, this explosion is just another part of the current humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, where 45% of the population live below the 2016 poverty line of $4.00 each day per person (World Bank). Domestic electricity is rationed, and the national currency is hyperinflated (Washington Post). On top of the explosion crisis, the devastating effects of COVID-19 are destroying hopes of a better future. Even with its current issues, Lebanon contains the highest level of refugees per capita in the world, with around 1 out of 5 people in the country being refugees (UNHCR). Let’s do our part in supporting a selfless group of people who have endured conflicts over and over again since the founding of their country.
