I just read this Mission Local article about a theft that took place the other day at Marshall Elementary School (largely Latino, K-5 Spanish immersion) at 15th and Capp Streets in the Mission District of San Francisco.
According to surveillance footage, all of the school’s earthquake preparedness supplies, garden tools and art supplies were stolen from the school’s storage shed on Sunday morning by a woman who jumped the school’s fence
I'm a neighbor, concerned citizen, and member of the nearby Dearborn Community Garden. I see how excited and knowledgeable kids in my garden are about gardening and growing vegetables and would like to help the school replace the supplies and tools that were stolen.
I spoke to Darya, the school's garden coordinator, who told me that garden supplies stolen include trowels, shovels, pruners, a hose, and a kids' wheelbarrow. She adds: Marshall Elementary is a very tight knit Spanish immersion school where everyone looks after each other. Parents are constantly volunteering their time to help out and the teachers and staff are truly committed to making the learning that goes on here as robust as they can. One of the programs Marshall has adopted within the past couple of years has been Education Outside. Students visit the outdoor classroom (aka garden) every week to explore areas of science that are difficult to truly understand from a textbook. Students get to connect with the natural world through digging, observing, exploring and even cooking.
This page will be shared with the school and posted on Facebook including MissionLocal's page .
The principal estimates that about $2000 worth of supplies was stolen. Since GoFundMe takes a fee and percentage from each credit card transaction that will total $200 or so of the $2000 raised, I set the fundraising goal as $2500, taking into consideration those fees.
