I am writing with hopes that I can obtain funding to participate in the San Diego Police Academy which starts October 31, 2016.
My resolve to become a Police Officer runs very deep. Six years ago my next door neighbor was shot by her husband. When I heard her yelling for help, I ran to her, was able to rush her to safety and apply compression to the gunshot wounds. She survived, her husband was sentenced to 18 years in jail. In this moment, my realization of my calling to help and serve others, especially in moments of duress, began my journey to where I am today.
Responding to an urgent call for help is not just an instinct, it is my passion and desire to serve and protect others. People who meet me for the first time often comment on my warmth and compassion. Those who know me, say I'm the friend they call on when in a pinch. Being a Police Officer seems like a natural fit. I can't believe it has taken me so long to find my life passion...and I'm even more baffled at how difficult it is to get there now that I know what it is I'm striving for!
For the past 20 years I have worked in Medical Device Sales. A profession I have enjoyed, but didn’t love. Constantly feeling like my life had a bigger and better purpose, I vowed to find my passion. A career where I would do it regardless of the pay, and strive to make a difference in my community, while providing for myself and my son.
Getting accepted into the San Diego Police Academy as an Open Enrollee is no small feat! I have passed a rigorous physical exam, academic exam, and background investigations. I am exceeding the physical requirements in several categories for the men, and all categories for the women.
My tuition is paid for by the Governor's Grant; however, I am having difficulty getting a loan to cover my living expenses for the six months in the Academy. Because of my recent bankruptcy, financial institutions have denied me a student and/or personal loan. I am in need of at least $5,000 in order to pay for living expenses during this 6-month timeframe.
I can assure you, your efforts on my behalf will not just fulfill a dream of mine, but will also help to put a cop on the streets who cares about humanity and strives to do the right thing. My gratitude for any contribution whatsoever, will be greatly appreciated and never forgotten!
