Aanii Boozhoo family, friends, and community members. In May of 2016, Anishinaabe Midewiwin-kwe, community leader, Water Walker/activist, jingle dress dancer, Anishinaabemowin Teg member and language teacher, Liz Osawamick received a diagnosis of breast cancer. Since then, she has had surgery and is now in the process of going through chemotherapy and radiation treatment for at least the next year. Because it is an aggressive form of cancer, her treatment has to be equally aggressive.

It is a battle that requires so much of Liz – her spirit, her body, her heart, and her mind have to be focused on healing. She has already received a great deal of support from family and friends, but, on a practical level, the expense of fighting this cancer is increasing. For instance, it is vitally important to ensure her body receives the highest level of nutrition, including organic foods, traditional Anishinaabe foods (i.e. venison/moose/fish), and naturopath supplements – all of which are very expensive. Liz has also combined traditional Anishinaabe healing and Ceremonial methods with the Zhaaganash cancer treatments. The expenses associated include travel and honorariums. There are also other small additional costs when combined amount to a great deal. Finally, Liz is a single mother with two children living at home – 9 year-old Florence and 16 year-old Miigwaans, who is also a member of the Deaf Nation. When Liz receives her chemo, she is incapacitated for a minimum of a week, so not only does she require care, but the kids do as well. Florence, for instance, has to be driven to school. Florence is also a hockey player for the Otonabee Wolves in Keene (which we are all so proud of!) and she has other extracurricular activities that require driving and care as does Miigwaans. He plays soccer which requires him to be picked up, too and his school is in Belleville, a two hour round trip.

Liz has dedicated her life to her people, her language, the lands, and the waters. We know she is much loved by many people, in many circles. She is very humble and she did not initially want to do this fundraiser, but we want her to get well and we want to ensure she has absolutely no worries when it comes to any of the costs she and her family will, or even may, experience.
