Liza's O2 Adventure for Royal Brompton Hospital

For people who don’t know Liza, she is a 51 year old lady living with Down Syndrome who was born with Atrioventricular Septal Defect (AVSD) which is a congenital heart defect. Liza was born 2 years before an operation was available but by 2 years old, it was too late because her lungs had already began to deteriorate. Liza then developed Eisenmenger Syndrome due to having an unrepaired congenital heart defect. Liza was later diagnosed with Pulmonary Hypertension at around age 24.

For those of you who are lucky enough to already know Liza, you’ll know just how amazing she is.. but something you may not know is the dedication and hard work of the people at the Royal Brompton and Harefields Hospital (RBH) Pulmonary Hypertension Unit (PHU) who have made it possible for Liza to still be with us today.

Pulmonary Hypertension is a rare condition affecting approximately 1 in 20,000 people in the UK which means the units are often bypassed when it comes to funding. Liza and 9 others are climbing over the O2 in London on 6th May 2025 in hope of raising some money for the PHU at the Royal Brompton and Harefields.

The PHU at RBH have worked alongside Liza since the age of 24 and given her life, enabling things we never thought would be possible. Without the amazing team of Doctors and Nurses Liza’s life would have been cut short way before her time. Professor, John Wort, has consistently provided Liza with the highest level of treatment available.

Liza has defied all odds and as a family we believe this is down to the Royal Brompton, so it’s time to give back! Any donations, big or small, are much appreciated.
