Hi, I'm Laurie and I'm raising money for my former H.S. teacher, M.E. "Liz" Hickey.
I first met Ms. Hickey in the Fall of 1978 when she arrived in my hometown of Beaufort, SC to teach Science at Beaufort High School. She made a tremendous impression on me and many of my classmates from the beginning. She made my high school years a special experience. She was young, energetic, slightly sarcastic, but always caring. My parents loved her, and so did many other parents in town. She stayed at BHS for a few years after we all graduated, but she eventually returned to Ohio to support her family. She continued to teach, in Catholic schools near her family.
She was a teacher who became a friend. She connected with the class of '82 in a special way. I maintained contact with her over the decades, and she always wanted to know what was going on in my life. She was there for me spiritually and emotionally when I lost my mom to cancer. She was always someone her students, family, and friends could count on for support.
The decades passed, but Liz always seemed to be a constant source of strength. When she and I were catching up by phone last Spring, I discovered that she (and her younger sister who now lives with her), had just weathered their second winter without a functioning furnace in their home. A retired Catholic school teacher on a fixed income just didn’t have the $7000-8000 needed to replace the furnace. Because of Covid, and personal medical conditions, Liz has not been able to supplement her fixed income with substitute teaching. Their financial situation has not improved, costs have increased (it’s likely at least a $10K job now), and winter will be returning to Ohio in a few short months.
Liz has always been one to help wherever she could. It’s not something she would ask for help with, but I’m asking, if you can help Liz out, please donate to this GoFundMe.
