Family of Jordan Herrera

By now we all know at least one COVID story. A friend of a friend,  a co-worker's aunt or the relative of an acquaintance. The person may have had no symptoms at all, was very sick for weeks, or had to be hospitalized and never recovered.

That last scenario is the story of my daughter, Elizabeth Hegwer, and her fiance Jordan.  Elizabeth, Jordan, and their two teenage daughters were diagnosed with COVID  near the end of June.  Sadly, Jordan was taken to the hospital for what seemed like typical chemo or cancer-related issues.  Jordan lived with soft- tissue sarcoma for the past 3 years and underwent multiple rounds of chemo and three surgeries.  The medical team at MD Anderson were optimistic that Jordan's cancer could be effectively controlled with chemo for years to come. Due to the effects of COVID, his illness unexpectedly progressed to terminal kidney failure.  Elizabeth had hoped Jordan could be released home with hospice care so that he could be surrounded by loved ones, but on July 12, 2020, 4 days after he walked himself out to the ambulance, he passed away in the ICU.  Elizabeth and her family were unable to see him in person from the time he was admitted to the hospital but were able to do a Zoom call in his final hours.  Jordan died a week before his 39th birthday.

Together, Elizabeth and Jordan provided a loving home for two daughters who are heartbroken with his passing. Elizabeth lost her income in December, as she was the full time caregiver for Jordan and their children.  In addition to funeral expenses, she has many financial responsibilities as she navigates her life now without Jordan.

Please donate what you can to help Elizabeth and her family get through this incredibly difficult time while they recover from COVID themselves. Thank you.
