LivableSF is a nonprofit organization working toward a more livable San Francisco by promoting thoughtful planning that serves the needs of all residents—families, workers, small business owners, and visitors alike.

We are raising funds to support the legal effort to reopen the Upper Great Highway and challenge Proposition K, the ballot measure that permanently closed this critical roadway to commuters, families, workers, small business owners, and visitors who rely on it to travel across the Westside and beyond.

The Great Highway has long served as an essential north-south route for San Franciscans. Its closure affects thousands of people every day by limiting safe, efficient access across the city, increasing congestion on neighborhood streets, and making daily life harder for residents who depend on this corridor.

This lawsuit is about more than one road. It is about whether major transportation decisions in San Francisco are made legally, transparently, and with the full participation of the communities most affected.

Proposition K raises serious concerns. It attempts to permanently close a public roadway, an area traditionally governed by state law. It bypasses full environmental review under CEQA, even though major transportation changes can have significant impacts on traffic, safety, emissions, and surrounding neighborhoods. And it moves forward without a clear, funded plan for the park it claims to create in place of the roadway.

San Franciscans deserve better. Decisions this significant should be legally sound, environmentally reviewed, and made with real community input, not rushed through without a complete understanding of the consequences.

That is why LivableSF has joined residents, small business owners, and neighborhood leaders in challenging Proposition K in court.
