Lena’s fight against Leukemia
Donazione protetta
Meet Lena, a lively 3-year-old and the adored only child of two deaf parents. Until a few weeks ago, Lena was happy and healthy, getting to know her new Wisconsin home after her family's move from Nebraska.
Not long after settling in, she began showing symptoms of what seemed to be the flu. Despite multiple visits to her new pediatrician, urgent care, and the emergency department, her health continued to decline.
On May 5th, Lena was transferred via ambulance to Milwaukee Children’s Hospital for further tests and was officially diagnosed with B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (B-ALL).
B-ALL is an uncommon and aggressive blood cancer that develops when the bone marrow overproduces abnormal B-lymphocytes. These cells normally combat infection, but in B-ALL, they become leukemia cells with an extended lifespan.
Lena's treatment plan includes 27 months of chemotherapy, with sessions twice a week at a hospital roughly 40 minutes from the family’s house.
This diagnosis is incredibly heavy, but is made even more difficult by their recent relocation. Having just begun new jobs, their health insurance has a large deductible with prescriptions being paid out of pocket before it kicks in. The costs of hospitalization, medications, and travel for chemotherapy are quickly becoming overwhelming, and there’s a long road still ahead.
Lena's parents, self-reliant and resilient, are not the type to ask for help, but if ever help were needed, it’s now. Your prayers and any contributions to alleviate the family's financial strain as they face this daunting chapter would be deeply appreciated.
