We’ve started this GoFundMe in the hopes that we can help make a difference for baby Everett and Summer & Evan McCurry as they have faced many trials in Everett’s short 8 months of life.
When Summer was pregnant, she was told later in her pregnancy that baby Everett looked like he had some heart issues and fluid on the brain and would need immediate heart surgery upon birth. With this information, they were placed under the care of a cardiovascular specialist and were told Summer would need to deliver at Ochsner hospital in New Orleans meaning they would packed up all their things and moved into an airbnb for an undetermined amount of time.
Everett was born on 10/12/2022, just one month short of Evan and Summer’s one year wedding anniversary. And very quickly, these newlyweds were thrown into hardships no parents should ever have face.
When Everett was born, he was moved to the CVPICU and they were not able to hold him or love on him as any new parent would like to. The doctors quickly ran additional testing on him to evaluate his current status. Everett was soon diagnosed with 1p36 deletion syndrome which is a chromosome disorder that typically comes along with severe intellectual disabilities and behavior problems. Fewer than 200,000 people in the US have this disease. We will not know until Everett ages what the severity of his condition will be but have been warned he may need around the clock care his entire life with possibly not being able to talk, feed himself, vision problems, seizures, etc.
Unfortunately, it didn’t stop with that devastating news. Everett has faced multiple health trials over his short life span such has getting heart stints to hold open the holes in his heart until he was bigger/healthier for open heart surgery, diagnosed with hydrocephalus and had brain surgery, been on breathing support, occupational therapy for feeding, almost lost his arm due to a blood clot, and so much more.
Currently, Everett is in severe need of open heart surgery in order for him to survive. His surgery was moved many times and on 6/8/23 he went in for surgery but when the doctors did a scope echo they found Everett’s heart function was significantly worse and they were unable to operate as they did not believe his heart or lungs had enough strength for the surgery. He is being moved back to the CVPICU while they try a medication to strengthen his heart and also get second opinions from Texas Children’s and Boston Children’s on his specific surgical needs as the doctor at Ochsners said they do not feel they have the adequate resources for surgery because his heart condition is just so complex. If they are unable to find someone who feels comfortable to perform this surgery successfully, then he will not be able to get the surgery, and he HAS to have this surgery to survive.
This is obviously heartbreaking for this young family as right when they think they will get a break, they get hit with another issue with no end in sight.
They have experienced major financial hardships with everything they’ve walked through and they honestly have no end in sight with a long road ahead. All of your donations are used to pay for medical and travel expenses for this young family as well as Everett’s future nurse care & therapies.
- They have been reduced to one income as Summer is now unable to work since Everett needs 24/7 attention.
- They have rising medical costs and many things that are not covered by insurance.
- They have extreme travel costs as they need to be in New Orleans and possibly Texas or Boston so they have been living at airbnbs, hotels, sometimes the hospital if they have room, paying for gas, food, etc.. and the times Everette has had to be airlifted to hospitals from home.
- They have emotional hardships as within their 1st year of marriage they had to be separated a lot due to Evan needing to work to support their family and Summer being with the baby during the weeks. They have missed out on holidays, friend’s weddings, family vacations, and the normalcy and ease of everyday life they may or may not experience again.
- They are also unable to be around any family if anyone has the slightest health issue or cough due to Everett’s non-existing immune system.
They have been through so much and have much more to unfortunately go through but their faith in God has been a guiding light for everyone to see. They never complain, they continue to put their trust in God, they hold fast to each other and are amazing advocates for their beautiful boy.
We thank everyone for your support financially, support of a kind word, and prayers lifted up! It is keeping this family going during a trial of a lifetime. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
