Toast Sternum Surgery and Recovery

Donation protected
Hello everyone! This is Toast, our adorable 6 and half month(ish) old kitten. We rescued Toast after a stray cat had kittens in my mom's garage. She was the runt of the litter but had the most spunk and energy out of any of the other little cuties. She stole our hearts immediately! Why Toast you might ask? Well her sister is named Avocado. :)

In January we discovered that Toast was born with a very severe case of pectus excavatum - a condition in which her sternum is growing inwards. Due to the severity of her condition, Toast has never taken a full breath and she becomes fatigued very quickly. She is a lively and adventurous little kitten and her inability to use her full lung capacity is becoming more and more of a problem every day.

In order to correct this, Toast will need to undergo multiple surgeries in which a brace will be placed around her rib cage in an attempt to open up her chest cavity. She will wear this brace for 8-12 weeks, with limited activity. Given how bad her condition is likely she will need to get this surgery done at least TWICE, if not more. Without the surgery, Toast will likely suffer from chronic respiratory issues such as infections and pneumonia, and could potentially suffer from cardiac issues later on as well, all of which could be fatal. With the severity of her case, she is also at risk of puncturing her heart and/or lungs in the future. However, our surgeon is confident that with these surgeries she will be able to live a happy, healthy, normal life!

Toast had her first round of surgery in March. All money donated would go to her surgery bills and her aftercare as she will need round the clock monitoring for about 12 weeks post operation. She will also need several medications to prevent infection and to keep her comfortable as this is going to be a very uncomfortable process.  Each round of surgery plus aftercare will be about $5,000. I was laid off due to COVID for most of last year and we currently don't have the funds.

We love Toast so much! She is truly a special kitten and we'd do anything for our fur babies. Any amount would help tremendously (seriously, a $1)! We know everyone has fallen on hard times lately but we aren't giving up on her so we're tapping into all of our resources.
