Dear Calistoga Community and Neighbors,

Little Omi is only four months old, was born with Down syndrome, and has struggled with medical conditions. On the morning of Tuesday, May 5th, his mother Judy drove him to the hospital in fear of dehydration after he had a bout of vomiting and not wanting to feed. Once they reached the hospital, Little Omi then went into cardiac arrest and ended up in critical condition fighting for his life. He was then transported by helicopter to the Oakland Children's Hospital, and after many restless nights, doctors were able to save his life. Little Omi suffered a tremendous amount of brain damage that has also affected his vision and mobility and will remain in the hospital for many weeks to come. 

Many of you know his mother, Judy Gonzalez Hernandez. She was raised in Calistoga and has worked for the Calistoga Unified School District for the past 18 years in Special Education. Judy has played a big role in her student's lives, helping close to a hundred students graduate from high school despite their struggles. Many have graduated college, have successful careers, and keep in touch with Judy to seek advice or have a good laugh. 

Judy is also the Union chapter president of the Calistoga Classified Employees for the Calistoga Unified School District. Her colleagues and the school district’s well-being has been an important issue for her. Many of us can attest to her generosity, love for her students, and love for her community. 

Now, Judy and her husband Omar need our help. After a year of COVID-19 and fire evacuations and the hardships those have given, they have both put their jobs and lives on hold to stay near the children's hospital in Oakland and make the important decisions about Omi’s care. Their two other children, ages two and thirteen, are staying with family members. 

We are raising funds to go towards medical bills & living expenses so that Judy and Omar may continue meeting Little Omi's needs as he heals.

Estimados vecinos y comunidad de Calistoga,

El pequeño Omi tiene solo cuatro meses, nació con síndrome de Down y ha luchado con afecciones médicas. En la mañana del martes 5 de mayo, su madre Judy lo llevó al hospital por temor a deshidratarse después de que tuviera un ataque de vómitos y no querer alimentarse. Una vez que llegaron al hospital, pequeño Omi sufrió un paro cardíaco y terminó en estado crítico luchando por su vida. Luego fue transportado en helicóptero al Oakland Children's Hospital, y después de muchas noches inquietas, los médicos pudieron salvarle la vida. El pequeño Omi sufrió una enorme cantidad de daño cerebral que también ha afectado su visión y movilidad y permanecerá en el hospital durante muchas semanas.

Muchos de ustedes conocen a su madre, Judy González Hernández. Se crió en Calistoga y ha trabajado para el Distrito Escolar Unificado de Calistoga durante los últimos 18 años en Educación Especial. Judy ha jugado un papel importante en la vida de sus estudiantes, ayudando a cerca de cien estudiantes a graduarse de la escuela secundaria a pesar de sus dificultades. Muchos se han graduado de la universidad, tienen carreras exitosas y se mantienen en contacto con Judy para pedirle consejo o reírse.

Judy también es la presidenta de la sección de la Unión de los Empleados Clasificados de Calistoga para el Distrito Escolar Unificado de Calistoga. El bienestar de sus colegas y del distrito escolar ha sido un tema importante para ella. Muchos de nosotros podemos dar fe de su generosidad, amor por sus estudiantes y amor por su comunidad.

Ahora, Judy y su esposo Omar necesitan nuestra ayuda. Después de un año de COVID-19 y evacuaciones de incendios y las dificultades que han causado, ambos han puesto sus trabajos y sus vidas en espera para permanecer cerca del hospital de niños en Oakland y tomar las decisiones importantes sobre el cuidado de Omi. Sus otros dos hijos, de dos y trece años, se están quedando con miembros de la familia.

Estamos recaudando fondos para pagar las facturas médicas y los gastos de manutención para que Judy y Omar puedan seguir satisfaciendo las necesidades del pequeño Omi mientras se recupera.
