Hello.
Sarah and Andrew Mitchell are fundraising for Little Hearts Matter, the only charity in the UK dedicated to supporting and empowering anyone affected by the diagnosis of a single ventricle heart condition – or half a working heart.
In 2015 our first child, Sophie, was diagnosed with a double inlet single ventricle heart, pulmonary atresia and transposition of the great arteries. She was a tough cookie and fought hard through seven surgical procedures and even pulled through a period of time on an ECMO heart and lung bypass system. But Sophie was quite small, which made it difficult for her main operation (a Blalock–Taussig shunt) to work. At 5.55pm on Sunday 25th October 2015 Sophie's shunt blocked and she had a cardiac arrest. The is a more detailed story about Sophie here:
We were immensely grateful to the intensive care team at the Royal Hospital for Children and to Crossbasket House in Glasgow, and in 2015 we raised £25,000 for them. Half of which was donated to support the major UK ECMO service run out of the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
In memory of Sophie on this 10th anniversary we are spending a year from October 2025 fundraising.
Our GoFundMe page has been set up to fund digital and tech prizes plus running costs of the events we are organising over the course of the year, including charity hockey tournaments and fitness challenges.
All monies raised through our events goes to Little Hearts Matter, registered charity: 1123290.
In October 2025 we made a great start to the fundraising year with a charity hockey match, and a 42 day fitness challenge. 42 days being the time we had with Sophie. Here is a short summary video:
