Last week Bubbas Station Rescue agreed to take in a “malnourished” dog.
On Tuesday the dog was brought to us.
In a plastic flea market bag.
What we received was a skeleton. Barely clinging to life.
This 18 month old dog weighed 19 lbs. He should’ve weighed approx 45lbs.
He was covered in open pressure sores from living in a crate for a year. A crate with no plastic tray, just a wire bottom.
His belly, chest, legs, privates, even the tips of his ears burned from the constant saturation of urine.
He could not stand or walk due to starvation and atrophy of the muscles.
He could not lift his sunken in head.

We removed him from the bag he arrived in, wrapped him in a blanket and rushed him to Pennridge Animal Hospital. During the ride, I held a limp lifeless soul promising him that if he could hold on, his suffering would be over.
He would be fed.
He would be safe.
He would be loved.
As I handed him over to the staff at PRAH, I told them that I didn’t fully know what they would find inside this blanket.
As we waited we could hear the comments coming from their triage unit.
Those comments reflected the horror that met their eyes. Those comments also reflected the anger every single person felt and feels over what was done to this innocent soul.
Starvation, neglect, abuse.

We asked PRAH to do whatever was needed to help him.
The entire time we were driving, he held his eyes wide open. He wouldn’t close them to rest or sleep. They remained wide open, as big as saucers.

I think he was telling us that he didn’t want to close his eyes for fear of death.
He wanted to live, he deserves to live.
Over the next several days he was cared for by the vets and the passionate staff of Pennridge Animal Hospital.

Through their skill and his will- he hung on.
1 tablespoon of food each hour is all that his body could handle. Alarms were set to be sure he would not miss that hourly tablespoon he truly needed and continues to need.
To look at him is heartbreaking.
To picture him suffering, day in day out, starving as he lived in a wire cage-unconscionable.
We can’t focus on those things now.
We can’t get stuck in our anger either.
He made it clear that he wants to fight for his life.
We made it clear that our mission, our reason for being here, is to fight for him and with him.
Little Felix, is 6 days into his new life.
He’s now permitted 2 tablespoons per round the clock feedings.
He has gained the strength to hold up his head AND is standing on his own.
He has a long long road ahead to be the dog he was born to be.
I let him know that he’s gonna need to keep building those muscles because he now carries the weight of all of our hearts.
We are here to ask for a little help.
If you’re able, on behalf of Little Felix, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
