Little Doug’s Miracle Heart Journey
Donation protected
At six years old, Little Doug was diagnosed with Biventricular Combined Systolic & Diastolic Heart Failure and Dilated Cardiomyopathy. His Ejection Fraction was 12% and doctors were unable to improve that. To save his life, a metal heart pump (LVAD) was implanted. After a time of recovery at the hospital, Little Doug became the youngest person in the world to go home on an LVAD. For two years he rocked the LVAD life, doing all the normal kid things—going to a regular school, biking, bowling, running, ga-ga ball, amusement park rides, participating in a walk-a-thon, and a musical, etc. He was engaging in a FULL and fun lifestyle until just a few weeks ago. Little Doug contracted an infection in his driveline and pump and began to decline in health. In the weeks following while being treated at a Wisconsin Children’s Hospital, Little Doug’s parents were given grim news: there was no hope and Little Doug would not make it. The doctors put him on a DNR order and he was to receive end of life care. Not finished fighting for their son’s life, his family contacted Texas Children’s Hospital to see if they would be willing to perform a surgery to remove the infected heart pump. Even with a small chance of success, TCH agreed to try. Transport was soon on the way and the family and Little Doug were transported safely to Texas. Within hours the surgery was successfully performed and so far, Little Doug is doing well in recovery. There is a lot more for little Doug’s body to accomplish, but we remain hopeful with the news of his positive progress. This truly is a miracle of God!
Unfortunately, the out-of-pocket medical expenses, lodging, food and travel expenses (for Dad flying back and forth to work) are sky high and adds to the family’s burden. This is something that family shouldn’t have to be concerned about at this time and should just focus on their little heart warrior’s recovery. Many have asked how we can rally around the Behl’s and here is an opportunity to do so! Would you consider giving to the family and praying for this special little guy?
