"Little Bunny is Aftersun meets I May Destroy You"
LOGLINE
Bunny books a solo holiday to Greece but will sun, sea, and the possibility of romance rouse the memory of domestic violence?
SYNOPSIS
Bunny, a suitcase, and her rose quartz she never leaves home without. It’s a year since Bunny’s last relationship, 31 is fast approaching and she has booked her first solo trip to sunny Greece. It seems like just the thing to finally put her demons to rest… you can never be scared when the sun is shining, right?
When Bunny arrives in Greece she meets Hali, he works at the B&B and is a snorkel instructor. He wants to take her out to sea and at first, she is unsure. Over the week their relationship begins to blossom becoming full of trust, lust, and chemistry… but this also summons the trauma of domestic violence that Bunny has been hiding.
Later in the holiday they finally spend a night together and the next morning Hali takes Bunny to a beach that’s his favourite spot to dive.
Whilst out in the water Hali gets trapped and hurt, he is bleeding, he begins to panic as does Bunny – she freezes and has a flashback to an attack from her ex-partner. She is on the floor half naked covered in glowing red marks over her neck and body. Howling out at him, a bloodied rose quartz in hand she has just hit him with. The howling brings her back to present where she snaps out of it and frees Hali, bringing him to shore.
Bunny is beat and is checking out early. As she is walking to the bus stop toward the airport she walks on by and finds herself at Hali’s front door. He welcomes her in and closes the door behind her. A new chapter?
WRITER STATEMENT - Holly Hawgood
I wrote this short film based off of my own experiences. What was important to me when writing Little Bunny was that I told the story from the perspective of healing and recovery. Domestic violence and violence towards women is rife and in my opinion not spoken about enough in this way.
I wanted to make a film to tell this particular story as I believe film is a great tool for education - and can often evoke a visceral response in an audience.
Framing this narrative with the perspective of healing rather than traumas winning, I hope to celebrate the women and people who are existing and living their day to day having experienced such trauma.
DIRECTOR STATEMENT - Isabel Steuble-Johnson
"Little Bunny" is a poignant exploration of healing, self-discovery, and the enduring scars of domestic violence. This film follows Bunny, a woman on the cusp of a new chapter in her life, as she embarks on a solo journey to Greece in search of solace and renewal.
On a personal level, "Little Bunny" has profoundly affected me. Bunny's journey resonates with me deeply, as it mirrors the struggles many of us face in confronting our own pasts and seeking healing.
The process of developing this story has been both challenging and cathartic. It has allowed me to reflect on my own experiences. Each scene, each moment of Bunny's journey, has been a reminder of the strength it takes to face our inner demons and the beauty that can emerge from such a journey.
