Litio contra la COVID-19

Tras 7 meses inmersos en la pandemia de la COVID-19, todavía no existe ningún fármaco o vacuna para tratar a los pacientes infectados con el SARS-CoV-2. Como investigadores del Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria Galicia Sur (IISGS) queremos contaros cómo el carbonato de litio, un tratamiento que se utiliza habitualmente para tratar algunas enfermedades psiquiátricas, puede ser un fármaco eficaz para el tratamiento de la COVID-19. Ya hemos publicado un trabajo con los primeros seis pacientes que lo recibieron, y próximamente publicaremos más datos, con más pacientes, con muy buenos resultados hasta la fecha.
Nuestro equipo está centrado en la investigación de enfermedades psiquiátricas, como la esquizofrenia, el trastorno bipolar o la depresión; y desde el inicio de la situación actual de emergencia sanitaria hemos intentado aportar nuestro granito de arena. Trabajando con el litio, un medicamento para el trastorno bipolar, comprobamos que también es efectivo para tratar a enfermos graves de COVID-19.
Ha sido muy complicado conseguir la aprobación del ensayo clínico y hasta ahora estamos trabajando sin financiación. Por esto y porque nos consta que muchos nos queréis ayudar y no sabéis cómo, os ofrecemos aquí la posibilidad de aportar lo que podáis para que este proyecto siga adelante.
Las donaciones van destinadas íntegramente al Proyecto Litio (ensayo clínico Nº EudraCT: 2020-002008-37). Realizaremos una memoria detallando cada uno de los gastos y publicaremos periódicamente los avances.

After 7 months immersed in the COVID-19 pandemic, there is still no drug or vaccine to treat patients infected with SARS-CoV-2. As researchers at the Galicia Sur Health Research Institute (IISGS) we want to tell you how lithium carbonate, a treatment that is commonly used to treat some psychiatric disorders, can be an effective drug for the treatment of COVID-19. We have already published a study with the first six patients who received lithium, and soon we will publish more data, with more patients, that have revealed very good results.
Our team is focused on the research of psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or depression; and from the beginning of the current health emergency situation we have tried to do our bit. Working with lithium, a drug for bipolar disorder, we could demonstrate that it is also effective to treat very serious COVID-19 patients.
It has been very difficult to get our clinical trial approved and so far, we are working without funding. Therefore, and because we know that many of you want to help us and don’t know how, here we offer you the possibility of contributing to the financing of this project.
Donations are destined entirely to the Lithium Project (clinical trial No. EudraCT: 2020-002008-37). We will make a detailed expense report and periodically publish the progress of the project.
