On Wednesday July 28th I was involved in a really bad vehicle crash and rushed by ambulance to Johns Hopkins Shock Trauma Hospital. I sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury, among other injuries. My car was totaled.
I don’t remember much of what happened after the crash, the ambulance ride, the ER, the hospital, or how I got home, and I still don’t.
The days, and weeks following the accident have been really difficult. Sometimes the most simple task exhausts me to the point that I have to rest and nap for hours. Due to this I am not able to ride my bike, which all of you know is my pride and joy.
Short term for me will involve lots of Neurologist, Doctor, Dentist, Physical Therapy, Cognitive therapy, Massage therapy, Neuropsychology appointments, and possibly others as I heal.
Making this journey one day at a time and waking each
day hoping for the best, I know that I am changed, and have accepted this. Luckily I am in the best physical shape I have ever been, I am strong, healthy, and determined to make a full recovery with the help I need.
I have been told by my primary care physician that TBI recovery is not linear, so I know that there will be many challenges ahead, but overall I feel pretty positive, and am grateful to be alive.
While my recovery is a process that will continue for the foreseeable future, I’ve set a big goal to travel to North Carolina in October to ride my bike across the state (about 680 miles), but I need to be realistic and it is nice to have this goal in mind. Although, I know based on the last couple weeks, that there are no guarantees that tomorrow will be what I thought it would be. So, I’ll be cautiously optimistic, work on trusting the process and believe that I have the power to persevere and thrive, no matter what.
To soften the financial blow that can often accompany horrific and sudden accidents, such as this one, I am asking for your help. I am unable to work right now until my balance and normal brain function returns.
All donations will go to medical expenses and recovery. If you would like to help in other ways, please send a message so I can provide an email or mailing address. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated and will go a long way in assisting my recovery. Thank you to everyone who has shown your support you are all appreciated more than you will ever know!
With love and gratitude - Lisajoy
