To My Friends, Family, Previous Colleagues and Potential Heroes,

As humbling as this is to ask, I have come against a personal challenge that I can no longer handle on my own. Until this time, I have been relying on my family to help me.

In 2007 I had a massive heart attack which left me unable to resume my position as Dean at Carrington College (formerly Western Career College). This was a huge life change for me but with strength and determination I made it through. Because of the heart attack, I have an area of stroke in my brain which causes depression, confusion and short term memory loss. My medical providers suggested that I file for permanent disability. I filed for SSDI in October of 2013. During the next 9 months I was turned down twice for Social Security because I have a Master’s Degree and should qualify for a “White collar job”. In an effort to exist I downsized to a small apartment, hired a lawyer and emptied out my retirement account. All of my savings ran out in March 2015 and I was forced to rely on my family members to help with everything from groceries to rent. This was especially hard for me because I am such a private person who was previously always able to take care of myself.

In the past year I also suffered a fall which resulted in my left hand’s fingers being immobile. I ruptured 9 tendons and only four of them can be repaired. I still have another painful surgery in my future to try and regain full use of my hand. After a hugely long wait I have finally gotten a court date at the end of February. Waiting so long and being financially dependent on my loved ones, they are monetarily tapped out. I am now receiving food stamps and I will most likely not see any SSDI payments until June if I am fortunate enough to be approved. In an effort to keep my beloved animals, possessions and home, I’m asking for your help. At this difficult time in my life, it’s embarrassing to ask, but I’m hoping that you will feel it in your heart to donate something. My son Joshua forced me to tell my story and I’m hoping your donation will be the step up I need to get through this trying time.

I want to thank my son, sisters, brothers, aunts and uncles. Thank you in advance also for your generosity, love and support, no matter how large or small. Your help can make all the difference in the world to me.
