Meet James, Lisa, and Hunter. In May, James and Hunter lost the love of their lives, Lisa. Lisa’s death was totally unexpected and as any unexpected death, devastating in many ways. We hope you will take a moment to read about Lisa’s life and the positive influence she had on so many, even though she personally faced so many difficulties.

ALL ABOUT LISA

Lisa proudly boasted her heritage as a Columbian-Italian born in Queens, New York. She and her brother Erik were primarily raised by their single mother, Martha. Lisa’s “difficulties” began at birth. (I only say “difficulties” because Lisa NEVER focused on her problems, but always had a CAN DO, or LET’S DO THIS attitude.) Lisa was born with Coloboma (optic nerve separated from the eye). She developed severe Psoriasis at an early age. Legally blind, Lisa’s early years were filled with hospital stays, painful treatments, and many, many doctor’s visits. The stories Lisa often shared about growing up were always focused on the good times she had and the good-natured trouble she and her brother Erik caused!

Lisa was a natural animal lover. She had the most incredible and vast knowledge of all thing’s animal. Lisa’s early work years were spent working in pet stores where she eventually came to California to work for a tropical fish distributor. This is where she met, fell in love with, and married James in 1997. They settled down and started raising Great Dane babies Leo, Duchess, Dexter, DJ, Archer, Molly, and Piper. Thankfully, not all at the same time! Lisa also discovered a love of photography over the years. It truly was amazing how someone who was legally blind could take the most amazing photographs. Lisa started attending Riverside Community College to learn more about photography and eventually earned two associates degrees (Photography and Marketing). Lisa was an active member of RCC’s photography club, contributing and keeping in contact with the club members even after she graduated.

In 2010 James and Lisa were blessed with Hunter. Lisa’s little tadpole. Once Hunter started school, Lisa jumped in, becoming a huge influence at Van Buren Elementary school where she worked tirelessly as PTA president and vice president. She helped the school with fundraisers for equipment and was hoping to purchase an art curriculum program.

After Hunter’s birth, Lisa also developed heart problems and we almost lost her a couple of times when an angioplasty went bad and she struggled with several infections. Lisa always put up a positive attitude and was willing to go the extra mile for friends and family and it was obvious. She was someone who could be depended on for love and support. What we didn’t all see was that the blindness, psoriasis, and heart issues, had Lisa in constant pain.

Lisa was recently diagnosed with uterine cancer. Once diagnosed, Lisa approached the battle against cancer as she did all things: as a courageous warrior! She was going to beat this thing as she had so many others! After a complete hysterectomy, Lisa began her first round of chemo. As many of you may know, chemo can wreak havoc on one’s body. Lisa’s first chemo on May 11th left her dehydrated and had her in the hospital within days. She was released from the hospital and although she felt better, she just couldn’t bounce back. She tried so hard, but she developed an infection and her heart just couldn’t do it anymore. We lost Lisa on May 22, 2021. She was a friend and supporter to so many. Always there when you needed her. The world lost a great, loving, strong woman, mother, wife, and great friend on that day. While we mourn the loss of such a fantastical person, her husband and son have to go on. We all know how when it rains it pours.

Last week James went to the hospital and developed pneumonia. He's home now and doing much better, but when it rains it pours. James and Hunter need a little sunshine. Somehow, some way.

Financially James, Lisa, and Hunter have led a simple life. Their primary source of income was that of Social Security Disability for both James and Lisa. James suffers from chronic and reoccurring depression and has a social anxiety disorder. We all know that disability is rarely enough to cover the basics, let alone any extras. But it worked for them. Lisa was the best bargain hunter on the face of the earth. Now that Lisa has passed, her disability stipend will go away and any death benefit Hunter will receive will be minimal. Can you imagine losing a loved one (in addition to a dog the month prior), and losing a portion of your income all in one fell swoop? The loss of this income means that James and Hunter will most likely have to leave their home of 17 years. They will have to come up with a hefty deposit and deal with moving expenses. On top of the unexpected cremation and other expenses having to do with Lisa’s death, the check engine light has come on in their van, as repairs exceed the value of the van, and they can’t get it smogged until it is repaired. The breaks on the van have also started squealing. These needed repairs are going to get expensive, so they might be looking for a replacement vehicle.

The primary goal for this Go Fund Me is to raise enough so that James and Hunter will be able to repair or replace their van, a deposit for a new rental, and maybe a little to do something fun. They need to focus on healing from their loss and not the struggles of life. Please donate to these two special guys during this difficult time of their lives. Thank you.
