Logline:
Bella and Maisie navigate the liveliness of a nightclub together, often taking a break in the sanctuary of the women's bathroom. However, they soon discover that even this safe haven might not be enough…
We are a group of student filmmakers from Salford University, hoping to raise money for our indie production and would appreciate any donations to our project.
Director’s statement:
‘Lipgloss, babe?’ is a short film set in a women’s nightclub bathroom that explores the mutual bond and solidarity between women, and ultimately revealing the harsher realities of nightclubbing.
Not enough films depict the unspoken bond between women and the uniqueness of our friendships with one another. We use this film as an opportunity to explore where this bond comes from. Is it from shared experience, inherent in ourselves, or rooted in mutual safety?
Additionally, there is no secret that nightclubbing in itself has a darker side, experienced by most women. A study conducted by Drinkaware found that two-thirds of women aged 18-24 who regularly attend clubs, bars or pubs, have experienced sexual harassment on a night out. PubMed Central [2024] also found that
women are four times more likely to experience sexual violence on a night out than men. So this film is about more than just one made by students… It aims to raise awareness of this problem.
We’re an all women crew, which we felt was important to showcase us as creatives in an inherently unequal industry (read the article: “Women’s Representation Behind The Scenes in Hollywood Has Barely Advanced in 26 years” [Elsesser, 2024] for more info).
How the funds will be spent:
The money donated will be spent on transportation, locations, equipment, cast and crew food and a festival run.
To show our gratitude, we will include your name in the credits of the film, and will provide an invite to our charity fundraising and networking event that will screen our final film. All proceeds of this event and any unspent funds will be donated to a chosen charity that supports women against violence and harassment.
We’re hoping to make this a campaign film, so please support us in this journey.
Thank you,
The crew of ‘Lipgloss, babe?’
