Lionel Duarte is a loved and respected member of the Tucson cycling and automotive community. On Saturday, August 11, 2018 Lionel was on a ride on the "A" Mountain Loop in preparation for his first bike-packing trip to the Grand Canyon. Another achievement to add to his cycling resume. While descending toward the bottom of the mountain after finishing his second repetition on the loop, a vehicle ran a stop sign as he made a right turn in front of Lionel. Lionel did not have time to react as his right of way was denied. The bicycle and the car collided with traumatic results. After what seemed like an eternity Lionel was transported to the hospital.
Several surgeons examined Lionel, and it was determined that since his hip was completely shattered he would need a hip replacement. He also suffered contusions with extensive road rash and a hard hit to the head demolishing his helmet and riding apparel. The person who hit Lionel fled the scene and police have not found him. He is obviously hiding and not taking responsibility.
We are reaching out to the community for assistance with Lionel's loss of income and medical bills. Any contributions are appreciated and we are grateful for the love and compassion of friends and loved ones. You are a blessing that can compensate for the lack of compassion of those who only think of themselves by running and hiding. As one experiences the dark side of humanity we also experience the loving side, we thank God for that.
May your help be a tenfold blessing upon you.
