On Thursday, June 25, 2020 Lionardo “Lio” Sanchez was admitted to Loma Linda Hospital in Southern California with acute Corona Virus symptoms. Lio, being the fighter he is began battling for his life from day 1. Lio took every effort to build up his lungs against the debilitating effects of this virus he lasted 14 grueling days, much without sleep, to finally succumb to its deadly attack to his lungs. He fought to the end.
Lio was born January 11, 1977 the eighth child in a family of 12 siblings to Ricardo and Linda Sanchez. He was the sixth son of the total of eight boys born in this family.
To all who knew Lio some aspect of his personality and character would undoubtedly be impressed upon their life. Some would remember from San Bernardino High School Football accolades he earned an MVP Award in 1995. Lio also played for a local junior college. In 1998 he left college to join the Army. He earned his “Jump Wing” as an Airborne Rigger in the 600 Quartermaster Company. He distinguished himself and his team with honors as an exemplary rigger. Lio faithfully served his country till he was discharged in 2001. In 2002 he joined IBEW as an Apprentice Lineman and earned the proud title of Journeyman Lineman in 2005. He had over 18 years of service and was a valued member of The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local #47. He found his calling in what he considered his greatest career achievement, which he loved.
Lio had a heart that wanted to give back. He became an instructor at the Cla-Nev JATC influencing andteaching young apprentices, he was well respected and gifted at reciprocating knowledge.
In the same year he met the love of his life Wendy Gomez and was married 6 months later. From this union was given four beautiful children, Lydia, Marley, “his name sake” Lionardo Jr., and their youngest Illyana. His passion for sports led him to create a character that emulated his love for football and his favorite team The Raiders. His image became known worldwide as the Mad Raider (A play on Alice in Wonderland’s Mad Hatter). Lio would appear at many free events to cheer up children and adults alike in anticipation for a fun football season. His wife and children joined him on many such excursions and shared his passion for connecting with people the world over.
Lio Sanchez was many things to many people. These accounts are brief and lack the full measure of his character and Spartan like personality. Lio was especially known for his charitableness to every person he met. This GoFundMe is set up with that in mind. He loved people and felt responsible for other’s needs. With any amount given his children and wife will find comfort in your generosity for the loss they have endured since his passing.
On Friday, July 10, 2020, the very same day he earned his “Jump Wings” 22 years ago in the Army, Lio Sanchez went home to be with his Lord and Savior.
I have had the luxury of working with Lio and the entire Sanchez crew in our line careers. I have also supervised Lio during the time he has spent teaching at the local apprenticeship where I work. His spouse Wendy Joy Sanchez and children will be eternally grateful for everyone's generosity. Once this campaign concludes, the withdrawal will be transferred directly into her bank account from the host "GOFUNDME" as she is the sole beneficiary.
