Lindsay's Immunotherapy Treatment
If you've ever met Linds, you know she's always been a "choose to make it a good day" kind of gal. That became especially apparent throughout her sophomore year of high school as she spent a good chunk of the school year in the hospital fighting Ewing's Sarcoma via hip surgery and chemo. It remained evident this spring and summer as she battled through two brain surgeries and radiation to curb recurrences of Ewing's in her brain, managing to wrap up her freshman year of college in the meantime. It's even true now as she looks ahead to the rest of life (majoring in nutrition, having a family, building her career) and strategizes ways to make the most of this life and time God has gifted.
Since we are dealing with Ewing's, which is already a pretty rare type of cancer, as well as some other factors (see posts on CaringBridge for more of Lindsay's story), typical American health-care cancer treatment options like radiation, chemo, and surgery will not be long-term helpful in fighting this. We have learned of immunotherapy treatments approved in many countries outside the US, but they are not something insurance will cover. The total out-of-pocket cost (including transportation, food, and lodging) is $45,000 that would all need to be paid up front, before we can schedule or begin treatment.
We recognize that, as with chemo + radiation + surgery, success is not guaranteed (Ewing's is both a bear and a wild card). However, this treatment is a shot at more time and life, which makes it a shot worth taking. From the beginning of this, we've come to know that time and life are a God thing, just as we recognize that funding this shot will have to be a God thing too. It's a big goal, but we have a big God.
