Help Secure the Legacy of Lincoln Temple
Dear friends and family,
On September 30, 2018, the church that I called home – Lincoln Congregational Temple - held its last worship service. On the occasion of my 50th birthday, in lieu of gifts, I’m requesting that my friends and family contribute to an exciting initiative to preserve the church’s legacy – The Nehemiah Project.
For those of you who might not be aware, Lincoln Congregational Temple was for many years one of the most prominent African American churches in Washington, DC. The church’s roots can be traced back 150 years to a mission that provided housing and education to freed slaves after the Civil War. Over time, Lincoln Temple evolved as a center for progressive ministry, learning and personal development, equality and justice, and community service to the surrounding Shaw neighborhood.
I am honored to serve on a transition team that is working to preserve Lincoln Temple’s legacy. Our goal is to redevelop our existing structure, which is now 90 years old and in need of major repairs, in a manner that is consistent with Lincoln Temple’s history and mission.
Lincoln Temple has committed $5000 to participate in the Nehemiah Project. By making this financial investment, we will be joined in covenant with the Central Atlantic Conference New Church Development Team, the Church Building & Loan Fund, and the Cornerstone Fund to engage in a process of redeveloping the building to do something new – a ministry that is needed in this time and place and into the future. We don’t yet know what that will be, but it could be anything from affordable housing to a community center to a space for the performing arts.
To get straight to the point, Lincoln Temple is investing everything we have to ensure that our building remains sacred and is used to serve our Stillspeaking God – not turned into million dollar condos.
Please consider making a donation to Lincoln Congregational Temple to help fund the Nehemiah Project. You’re not only helping to preserve our church’s legacy, you’re making an investment in the future of Washington, DC and the Shaw neighborhood.
Kind regards,
Michael C. Hargreaves
