Lily’s 500,000 steps in May
As much of my close friends and family will know last year on the 1st of May 2020 my Granda Stan was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid leukaemia (AML) a very aggressive form of blood cancer.
We were told we would have a month with with him, 3 weeks of which he would spend alone isolated in hospital due to Covid restrictions and the urgent need for treatment.
Nothing quite can compare to being told news like that, our whole world flipped upside down with the prospect of loosing such an incredible part of our lives and life was well and truly put on a countdown. The pride I have in my grandads strength and resilience to get himself home amazes me every day . However he is not alone. So many people this past year have had to face cancer diagnosis alone and I can only applaud their unimaginable strength. With the help of Macmillan support thousands of people have not stood alone during such a harrowing time.
Which is why my Grandad and I have set a challenge for me to walk 500,000 steps during May. A lovely 236.7 miles, not like stan to make things difficult, and he has even promised to walk a mile with me once he’s built himself up a bit ! My main reason behind doing this is that I wanted to show my Granda just how proud he has made me this past year and my whole life for that matter. As somebody who has held my hand when I have needed support and cheered me on in everything I do I want to show him just how amazing he really is. We are celebrating making a year post diagnosis and hopefully many more! Anything you can give will help, from £1- £100 , anything you can do will make the biggest difference in supporting people with cancer.
