Lily in the Mud — An Arthouse Psychological Film by ZAMEEN-A

A new independent film by ZAMEEN-A

Lily in the Mud is an art-house psychological film about desire, identity, and the darker pursuit of transformation. The proof of concept descends from an abstract inner landscape of movement and sound, into the intoxication of underground club culture, before opening into a shadowy psychological void.

This is the first step toward bringing the feature to life.

ABOUT

Lily in the Mud marks my first venture into independent film under my artistic project ZAMEEN-A. I am developing the film as writer, director, and composer, bringing together the different strands of my practice — sound, movement, and visual composition — into a single cinematic work. My background is in music, performance, and multidisciplinary art, with a focus on creating immersive experiences through multimedia.

Much of my work explores emotional interiority — the hidden dimensions of the human experience — and the ways identity, self, and body can become abstract, unstable, or transformed.

Through sound, movement, and visual composition, I’m interested in translating internal states into environments that audiences can inhabit. Film feels like the natural evolution of that exploration.

APPROACH

This project is being developed with my collaborators Sebastian Syrota and Madison Isolina, whose experience and cinematic sensibilities are integral to shaping the film’s language.

Together, we are approaching Lily in the Mud as a convergence of disciplines. The film blends contemporary movement, experimental scoring, and stark visual composition to create a psychological landscape where realism and abstraction collide.

At the center of the story is Aja, a young violinist who abandons the rigid discipline of her life in pursuit of freedom. What begins as liberation becomes a descent into an intoxicating underground world where desire mutates into something darker — a shadowy confrontation with the parts of the self we try to outrun. The film unfolds as a psychological dive into self-realization gone wrong, using the body, sound, and image as narrative tools, allowing subconscious forces to surface through rhythm, movement, and atmosphere rather than exposition.

CONCEPTUAL NOTE

Lily in the Mud approaches cinema as a space where sound, image, and gesture converge to reveal psychological states that resist language. Drawing from performance, experimental music, and contemporary movement practices, the film uses moments of abstraction to surface hidden emotional states — reimagining the body and psyche in raw, exposed ways.

At the center of the feature is a fascination with the unstable boundary between identity and desire, and the strange moment when the pursuit of transformation begins to consume the self. As the protagonist abandons the rigid discipline of her life in pursuit of freedom, the film traces a descent into environments where longing, projection, and attachment begin to reshape both body and psyche.

While strongly narrative in structure, the film integrates poetic devices — including title cards, experimental scoring, and stark high-contrast black-and-white cinematography — allowing subconscious forces to emerge through rhythm, image, and atmosphere rather than exposition. In this way, Lily in the Mud exists at the intersection of narrative cinema, performance, and sound-based art.

WHY CROWDFUNDING

The sequence we are producing is a proof of concept designed to demonstrate the film’s visual language, tone, and mythology before moving into feature development.

Crowdfunding allows us to create this piece independently, with the care and creative control that a project like this requires. It also allows us to build an early community around the film — inviting supporters into the process from the very beginning.

Independent cinema often begins with a small group of people who believe in an idea before it fully exists. Your support helps us create the first piece of this world and open the door for the larger film to follow.

With the script complete and the creative team in place, this proof of concept is the next step toward realizing the feature.

JOIN US

With the script complete and the creative team and talent in place, the project is ready to move into production on the proof-of-concept sequence. This campaign helps us bring the shoot to life with the care and precision the film requires.

Funds raised through this campaign will support the production of the proof-of-concept sequence, including location, cinematography, performers, sound design, and post-production. The goal is to create a carefully crafted piece that captures the film’s visual language and psychological atmosphere, allowing us to present the project to producers and collaborators as we move toward developing the feature.

Support for this campaign helps us bring the first chapter of Lily in the Mud to life.

Every contribution helps us take the next step.
