Lilia Machado's Journey to a New Kidney

Hi there! My name is Lilia Rosa Walton-Cueva, or to some, “Little Lily.” My grandmother is Lilia Rosa Machado, also known as “Big Lily.” If you’ve never had the chance to meet Lilia, she’s one tough as nails, spunky little lady with a love for life, laughter and dancing. If you walk into her house, she’s always ready with a welcoming hug, a warm plate of Saltado, and you may even catch her dancing along to her 70’s Funk Pandora station. Lilia is a force to be reckoned with, a powerful storm- independent and strong. She is the matriarchal head of our crazy little family- a friend, daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and soon to be great-grandmother! She decided to go back to school in 2016 to further her education. She pushed and fought her way through school, even during hospital stays, but nevertheless, always dreading the math assignments.

Lilia was born in Peru in 1957, and made her journey to America at 10 years old. When she was born, she came out with an immense amount of health conditions; polio, heart disease, and kidney failure. Lilia had to medically retire from CMF (California Medical Facility) in 2005 to handle what was to come. To combat her heart disease, Lilia has had 10 stents placed in her heart and underwent a Double-Bypass Open Heart Surgery in 2012. To deal with her kidney disease, she has been on Dialysis since 2004, handling it all like the champ she is! Lilia has no functioning kidneys, and has been on and off the transplant waitlist for the past 9 years, taking countless trips and tests only to be let down each time. In September 2018, she finally got the call. They were ready to move her to the top of the list, her time was here! They got her started on all the endless amounts of necessary paperwork and filings, but her insurance called back to tell her that they could not cover the full amount of the immunosuppressants/anti-rejection medications needed for after the procedure, and the deductible would be coming out of her own pockets. These deductibles come out to $10,000- and they need to be paid by April 2019 or she will be dropped back down the list.

I am here to ask, during this holiday season, if you could take some time to think of Lilia in the spirit of giving. Any donated amount will help Lilia in this journey to a new kidney- even sacrificing the amount you spend for your daily coffee would help! If you are unable to donate, we ask that you please help by sharing this to your friends and family and send positive thoughts as we push through to conquer this challenge!

Thank you all for your endless amount of love and support and we appreciate your time!
