Lighting the Way for Rosemary

On May 18th, 2024, I will be participating in the Keys 100 ultra-marathon, a 100-mile race stretching between Key Largo and Key West. I will be running this race for the second year in a row to raise money for the patients supported by our nonprofit organization, Seis Luces.

Last year’s fundraising efforts resulted in over $8,000 that was raised for the patients supported by our organization. This money has allowed Seis Luces to provide care baskets, birthday celebrations and holiday experiences for patients.

I am honored to dedicate this year's race to our patient, Rosemary Luna, and her family as she moves on to the next step in her treatment. Rosemary has been an everlasting light of strength, courage, and grace since day one. It is an honor to be able to run this race in support of her.

Dr. Feinstein and I developed Seis Luces, or Six Lights, to enhance the lives of our acute leukemia patients. The mission of Seis Luces is to support, encourage and brighten the lives of patients during their darkest hours. Instead of focusing on research, Seis Luces is invested in creating experiences that bring light to patients’ lives.

In the past two years our hero, Rosemary, has endured unbelievable physical, emotional, and financial hardships in a fight for her life. Our hope is that her upcoming bone marrow transplant will cure Rosemary of her disease and allow her to pursue her wish of becoming a nurse and helping others. Unfortunately, the financial burden of a transplant, outside of insurance coverage, can be overwhelming for a patient and their family. This includes high copays, expensive medications, gas for driving to daily clinic visits, and covering expenses to allow her caregivers to take time off from work to provide the required 24-hour care that is needed during the year following transplant.
