Hi my name is Aliyya Kulumba and I’m currently a junior attending the University Of Arizona. I’m currently majoring in biology with an emphasis in biomedical sciences and minoring in Psychology and Human Anatomy and Physiology!

I’m a First Generation student, and plan on pursuing a career in Pediatrics post undergrad and hopefully medical school. Being in college, as a lot may know, comes with a lot of financial hardship. I personally wouldn’t be where I am without the help of my mother. Over the last 2.5 years my mom has supported me not only in my education, but funding for it out of pocket. As we’ve been denied loans, paying out of pocket has been the only option.

Being an out of state student, my tuition is a lot more than most. My cost of attendance is around $16,000 a semester. My mom has always wanted the best for me and has always supported my dreams, hence my attendance at The University of Arizona.But this leads to the enormous increase in finances already and her 24/7 work schedule. While doing this she’s also providing for my 10 other siblings, family back in the motherland, and I would say herself but with there being so many responsibilities she unfortunately doesn't always have the privilege of doing so.

Nearing my senior year, we still have enormous past due balances and have tried to figure out every single option available. On top of that I have a little sister who will also be attending University in the fall. All my moms ever wanted was for my siblings and I to attend school and build a career as she didn’t have the privilege of doing so herself. I’m seeking help to not only support and help me with being able to complete my education, and for my little sister to start college, but I also want to be able to lighten my moms financial distress, as she already does above and beyond.
