Light Up The Historic Trees

Let's Light Up Our Landmarks! Planted circa 1880, these twin Norfolk Pine trees now 130' tall and are national landmarks designated as Millennium Trees by the State of California and the Federal Government in 2000.   The trees bring distinction to the Downtown District of Ventura, California.

Owned by Mission San Buenaventurra (9th mission founded by St. Junipero Serra), the trees have been lit during the Christmas season and at other times throughout the year for nearly 80 years.  Last year the lights failed.  A new lighting system was designed and rejected due to an estimate of $63k.  A second design by Mobil Illumination has been accepted at an estimate of $29,994.25 to light up both trees.

We need to raise 50% of the $30,000 by October 15, 2018 to secure the lights being installed for the holiday season.  Since 2012, the Mission has partnered with the Downtown Business Partners to expand this annual family event from several hundred persons in 2012 to nearly 3,000 attendance in 2017.

Hopefully on November 30, 2018 the two historic Norfolk Pine Trees will come alive with festive lights while carolers sing and entertain 3,000+ community members who gather in front of Mission San Buenaventura, Figueroa Plaza and in Mission Park. The festivities include a Christmas Village with a variety of booths including food and beverages for the family in Figueroa Plaza, canned food Christmas trees sponsored by Food Share and a live Nativity sponsored by Holy Cross School.

Traditionally, our mayor and the pastor of the Mission welcome Santa Claus.  When Santa lights the trees the magic begins with snow and festive music. Activities for children of all ages are sponsored by the businesses of the Downtown District.

We may not have it all together, but together we have it all.  On behalf of the Mission parish and the entire Downtown district of Ventura and the thousands of children and their families will enjoy thisremarkable and historic tradition for many years to come, we thank you and we bless you with prayers of gratitude.
