Light Up Sturgeon Bay Skatepark!

Overview

In 2014, the Sturgeon Bay Skatepark Initiative completed a $400,000 fundraising drive to pay for the construction of Door County’s only public Skatepark. Since then, it has become one of Sturgeon Bay’s most heavily used parks. From April to November, the youth of our community and visitors from all over spend hours at the skatepark, engaging in a healthy outdoor activity and building friendships. Yet every day when the sun goes down, the last skater goes home, wishing they could have had just a little more time...

In 2018 our group obtained a lighting plan from Musco Lighting, a nationally recognized company that has experience installing overhead lighting of skateparks. Their design utilizes state-of-the-art LED lights that minimize energy consumption and light pollution.

The City recognizes the benefits of lighting the skatepark and supports the idea, but has been unable to fund it.

The Friends of Sturgeon Bay Skatepark is working to fund a lighting project that will allow park users to enjoy a lit park into the evening, extending the park's usage by as much as five hours per day. During the summer, skateboarding after dark is also more comfortable due to the lower temperatures. Lighting of the Sturgeon Bay Skatepark would provide skaters the same benefits as other athletes who currently enjoy lit venues in Sturgeon Bay, such as tennis, baseball, soccer, and football teams.

Goal

Our goal is simple -- to raise enough money to pay for the design and installation of lights at the skatepark. The estimate is $75,000. We intend to raise the money over the next 6-12 months.

The City of Sturgeon Bay will make the infrastructure upgrades to implement the project and maintain the lighting once installed.

About Musco Lighting

Musco Lighting of Oskaloosa, Iowa, has provided a custom design made up of three light poles with LED lights, Light Spill Control technology and timers that shut the lights off when nobody is using the park. Musco has experience with the unique challenges associated with lighting a skatepark. Musco has worked to light several other fields in Sturgeon Bay.

Light Up Sturgeon Bay Skatepark is a GBASO project.  All donations for this project, less processing fees, will go directly to the Sturgeon Bay Skatepark Lighting project.
