Our Unique Space & Program
My name is Daizy Cushner and I'm the Early Childhood Art Teacher at Capital City Public Charter School, located in Washington, D.C. At CCPCS, children in Pre-K visit the Art Studio in small groups to learn about a variety of materials, advanced artistic processes, and to further explore personal topics of interest. It is really such a special place in our school for children to shine and showcase the capabilities of our youngest learners in our community.
Over the past 5 years, I have worked to make the Studio a space for all children to be themselves, find inspiration and ask questions. Last year, I wrote a curriculum for a 10 week study of color and color mixing that has since become a staple in the Pre-K program. Children spend weeks experimenting with mixing colors, while also connecting colors to emotions and objects of interest. Next, children envision their favorite colors and begin mixing until they have a color that's just right. Children incorporate their new colors into a cohesive painting with a connected story. Leftover paint was added to their easel and children worked on collaborative paintings with their friends! Finally, children give each of their colors a name and sign their work. Last year, I self published a book showcasing this work, that was then accepted into Expeditionary Learning "Models of Excellence" as a resource for other educators.

The enthusiasm for this project continues to grow, and I watch children take their new knowledge about color mixing and implement it into other areas in the Studio and their classrooms. Please check out the Studio blog to read further about the process!

Elevating The Extraordinary Work
I am raising money for the Kodo Kids Light Laboratory, the only light panel that allows for direct physical control over color mixing, hue and color intensity. By turning the dials to add or subtract color, children are able to create unique shades and investigate the elements of light. Included in the Kodo Kids Light Laboratory are additional pieces, such as a weaving ring, messy material tray and marble board to support all childrens interests and abilities. Having the Kodo Kids Light Laboratory as a staple in the Studio for next years color study will elevate this work and childrens understanding of light and color. Donations will go directly towards the cost of the Kodo Kids Light Laboratory, tax and shipping to CCPCS.
