Those lucky enough to have met Eliesha Lovell know that she has the innate ability to connect with people on a level that most others cannot. Quick to laugh at a joke with her whole soul, and always there to lend an empathetic ear, she is truly a shining light in the lives of all she touches.
Eliesha is an occupational therapist and yoga instructor. She hails from Ithaca, NY, and now lives in Colombia with her husband Daniel, where they followed their dream to start an eco-lodge and retreat business that could offer tourists a beautiful place to lie their heads, fill their bellies with organic, locally-grown food right from the land, and take yoga classes infused with Eliesha’s unique positivity. Eliesha and Daniel have a beautiful 6 year old daughter, Aria who loves to dance and sing with her mama.
Now our strong, vibrant Eliesha is facing a challenge she never expected. Starting in late September of 2020, a sarcoma tumor was found under her chin, and on December 6th she underwent surgery to remove it. Unfortunately, the tumor returned a few weeks later, returned again to its original size, and was growing very quickly. Doctors have confirmed the cancer has also spread with nodes on her lungs and liver and is classified as Stage IV.
She has completed the first chemotherapy round in Colombia and we saw some evidence of the tumor shrinking. Lesions in her lungs and liver remain, and a continued treatment plan, including additional surgeries will be needed. She is fatigued and still feels pain at the tumor site. She had, and has recovered form some complications that landed her in the ICU for a few days, but in true Eliesha style, manages to impress us with her good spirits.
Eliesha expressed her desire to return to the U.S. to continue treatment closer to family and pursue the best treatment available for this aggressive cancer. Thanks to
the unrelenting advocacy of family and friends, she is now staying in a friend’s home in Hoboken awaiting her first appointment at Memorial Sloan Kettering in NYC!
Eliesha is an extremely determined and willful woman and we all remain hopeful that treatment is effective and she feels bouyed by being in the hands of the most capable medical professionals and being closer to family during this challenging time.
This campaign has been initiated to defray the immediate and sustaining costs of the transfer of care, enrolling in (and continuing) treatment with the chosen cancer center in the U.S., facilitating safe travel for Eliesha and her family as necessary, and covering unforeseen costs that the family will incur during this challenging time.
As we understand better what the family will need moving forward, updates will be made to this page to allow Eliesha’s far-reaching community to help offset the burden on the Buitron-Lovell family.
