Lift for Raul: A Veteran's Path to Mobility
Donation protected
My name is Rachel. I am the daughter of Raul Gutierrez, a proud USMC Veteran. This last year has been extremely difficult for my dad. He was recently diagnosed with dementia. As difficult as living with this illness is, his mobility is something he deeply cherishes. He has always been independent with any tasks that were asked of him. He was an avid walker every day, rain or shine. Several kids who wait at bus stops describe him as the man who walks every day and picks up trash during his walk.
Two years ago, during his morning walk, he was struck by a car. The injuries were damaging to the point where he was no longer able to do his daily walks. He had to get metal plates and screws to hold his bones together, making it challenging to not reinjure his legs. That has led him to have poor circulation in his legs, causing severe pain. We exhausted all possible procedures to keep his life as he has only known it. Sadly, the procedures that were done were unsuccessful. The best option was for him to get amputated from his knee and down. This is new to him and my family to adjust to, helping him navigate as an amputee.
His wife (my mom) of 60 years is right by his side every day. The lift that we are trying to raise funds for would help her care for my dad. With this lift, she will be able to help him shower, eat at the table, go to the bathroom, or just take a joy ride. Everyday, he wears his Marine cap. Even when he was at the hospital.
We would be appreciative of any amount donated or sharing this post. We thank you for taking the time to read this.
