My Goal:
To receive funding to complete my lifelong work and dream to continue my sitar performing career in India.
Qualifications:
I have been studying sitar and North Indian classical music since 1970. I am a disciple of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and a student of Pandit Nikhil Banerjee. I also studied with Pandit Ravi Shankar. I am also an ethnomusicologist; I received an M.A. from University of Hawaii and completed all my course work for a PhD at University of California Los Angeles. I have performed many concerts in India, Europe and the U.S. I went to India in 1979, 1993-'95, 1996-'97 and 1998 to 2000. I made a CD on Global Pacific Records and I have over 400 music videos on YouTube.
On my return to U.S. I taught lecture courses at Metro State College Denver, Colorado.
Obstacles:
in 2001 I suffered a heart attack and underwent a procedure. Following that I experienced ill health and have been unable to return to India to resume my concert career. I have continued my pratice and study of sitar. Recently, my health has improved and my sitar playing has improved reaching new dimensions of art and achievment. I feel ready to fulfill my life's destiny as a non-Indian exponent of concert art. Since there is no infastructure in U.S. for non-Indians to perform I need to resume my concert career in India. Previously in India my ability had been recognized; I performed in many grand venues and was written about in the Indian press: Times of India, etc.
My sincere wish:
To return to India and continue and expand the concert career I had begun there in the latter part of the 1990s. I would like to share my upgraded abilities with my Indian brothers and sisters. I would not like my abilities and knowledge of Indian music to go into the grave. Without funding I will not be able to fulfill my destiny. I will be filled with gratitude for the help of the concerned parties.
How I will use the funds:
I funds I receive will be used to purchase roundtrip airfare from SF to Kolkata and to and from the Indian cities which are India's music centers and to pay for lodging and shelter for two years.
