Scott is more than just a man seeking a transplant. He is a dedicated husband, a loving father to three children, and a grandfather to two grandchildren who he spoils rotten. For the past decade Scott, who is a retired Registered Nurse, took on the responsibility in caring for the love of his life and wife, who is homebound. It came as a shock to Scott when last November (2018) he woke up with severe swelling and numbness in his legs. He walked into the emergency room that day and wouldn’t leave for a month. This was devastating to both him, his wife who relies on him for her care, and our entire family. After numerous tests, unsuccessful treatments, bone marrow biopsies, and platelet and blood transfusions, Scott was given the worst news he could imagine: he was diagnosed with severe Aplastic Anemia.
Aplastic Anemia means that Scott’s bone marrow is failing, leaving him with minimal blood cells and putting him at high risk of internal bleeding. He has to receive platelet and blood transfusions three days per week to keep him stable until he is able to receive a life-saving bone marrow transplant.
Now, Scott is no stranger to fighting a medical battle. In fact, 30 years ago Scott underwent radiation therapy for cancer and won. He thought that all was behind him, but unfortunately his doctors suspect that his Aplastic Anemia was caused by that radiation therapy from so long ago.
Scott is currently undergoing treatment at the Cleveland Clinic Tausig Cancer Center. His bone marrow transplant is tentatively scheduled October 24th, 2019. Along with the transplant he will also receive chemotherapy and radiation therapy, spending a total of four to six weeks in the hospital.
After his return home, his family will need to provide him with 24/7 care for at least 100 days to facilitate his recovery and maintain his well-being. In preparation for this, Scott and Patricia had to make the heartbreaking decision to give up their home of 30 years and move closer to family who can provide them with the care they need during this difficult period of their lives.
Your kind donations would mean the world to Scott and our family. It will help us cover the cost of Scott’s medical bills and any expenses related to this heartbreaking and unexpected situation, so that his only focus is on getting better and getting back to his full life!
